How to install a travel eSIM on iPhone without starting the trip confused.

1. Check the iPhone before buying or installing

Apple's general requirement is an iPhone XS, XS Max, XR or later, but model and region exceptions matter. Apple currently says that, in China mainland, only iPhone 17e and iPhone Air support eSIM; some Hong Kong and Macao models use two physical nano-SIM cards instead. Check the model number and purchase region, not only the product name.

If you are still uncertain, complete the phone compatibility check before purchasing or scanning a QR code.

A travel eSIM from a different provider also requires an unlocked phone. Open Settings → General → About. Apple says an unlocked iPhone displays No SIM Restrictions beside Carrier Lock. If it shows a lock, only the current carrier can unlock it.

2. Install the travel eSIM

Providers do not all deliver eSIMs the same way. Use the method in the order confirmation or provider app. Do not try to convert your home SIM or use Apple's nearby-iPhone transfer flow when the goal is to add a newly purchased travel plan.

Option A: scan a QR code

1. Display the QR code on another phone, tablet or computer.
2. Open the iPhone Camera app and scan the code.
3. Tap the Cellular Plan Detected notification.
4. Tap Continue, then Add Cellular Plan or Add eSIM.
5. Enter the provider's confirmation code if one was supplied.

On iOS 17.4 or later, Apple also allows you to press and hold a QR code shown in the default email app or browser, then tap Add eSIM. A QR code may be single-use, so keep the original email and do not repeatedly delete and reinstall the profile.

Option B: use a provider link or app

On iOS 17.4 or later, a supported provider link can open an Activate New eSIM prompt; tap Allow and continue. If the provider uses an App Store app, sign in to the correct purchase account and follow its installation flow. Review the validity trigger before confirming.

Option C: enter details manually

If the provider supplied an SM-DP+ address and activation code, go to Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Data) → Add eSIM / Add Cellular Plan → Enter Details Manually. Copy the fields exactly. Do not invent an APN or confirmation code that the provider did not give you.

3. Label the lines so you cannot confuse them

After the second plan is added, label the existing number Home and the new plan Travel. Change a label under Settings → Cellular → select the line → Cellular Plan Label. Clear labels matter because the same names appear in calling, messaging and cellular-data controls.

4. Set up safely before departure

Installing before travel gives you time to solve QR-code or account problems on reliable Wi-Fi. Whether the travel line should remain on or off depends on the provider's instructions and activation rule. Do not assume that turning a line on is harmless, and do not assume that installation always starts the validity clock.

Save the QR code, manual installation fields, receipt, plan terms and support channel offline. If the provider offers an in-app status page, confirm that the profile is installed without assuming that destination data should already work at home.

5. After landing, switch cellular data to Travel

On iOS 26, Apple may show a Turn On Travel eSIM prompt and let you choose Travel eSIM Only or Travel eSIM and Current eSIM. If both remain active, Apple warns that the home line can still incur roaming fees. You can always review the settings manually.

Give the phone a few minutes to register on a supported local network. Then open a simple webpage with Wi-Fi turned off. Check that the status bar shows a local carrier or a working data indicator before relying on maps, rides or tickets.

6. Keep your home number without giving it the data bill

A data-only travel eSIM does not replace your normal phone number. You can often keep the home line active for iMessage, FaceTime and incoming messages while selecting Travel for cellular data. However, calls, SMS and other home-line activity may still be billed by the home carrier. Check its roaming terms before leaving both lines active.

If iMessage does not reactivate after adding an eSIM, Apple's current iOS guidance is to open Settings → Apps → Messages, turn iMessage off, then turn it back on. Carrier SMS charges may apply during phone-number activation.

7. If the travel eSIM will not install or connect

Start with reversible checks. Do not delete the eSIM unless the provider confirms that it can be reinstalled or issues a replacement. Many QR codes cannot simply be scanned again.

Apple places IMEI and EID under Settings → General → About. Share identifiers only through the provider's official support channel. Never post a QR code, activation code, EID or full order details in a public forum.

If the profile is installed but still has no data, follow the longer travel eSIM troubleshooting sequence → before deleting anything.

8. Switch back when you return home

Open Settings → Cellular, turn the Home line on, select it under Cellular Data and turn off the travel line. iOS 26 may do part of this automatically in supported regions, but verify the result yourself. Do not delete the travel eSIM if the provider allows top-ups or future reuse; turn it off and keep the plan details instead.

Can I install the eSIM days before departure?

Usually you can install early, but the safe answer depends on the package's activation trigger and installation deadline. Read the exact provider instructions first.

Should Data Roaming be on for the travel eSIM?

Many international eSIMs use partner networks and require it, but follow the provider's instructions. Enable it on Travel—not automatically on Home.

Should I remove my physical SIM?

No. A supported iPhone can use a physical home SIM and a travel eSIM together. Use line and roaming controls instead of removing the card unless your carrier or device instructions require otherwise.
