Saily is the more natural first check when you know roughly how many gigabytes you need and want to pay for a fixed allowance. Holafly is the more natural first check when you want unlimited phone data for an exact trip length and accept the selected plan's fair-use and hotspot limits. Compare the exact destination product: neither provider has one universal plan.

On the official Japan pages checked August 13, Saily displayed fixed packages starting at US$3.99 and an unlimited 15-day option. Holafly let the buyer choose trip length and displayed unlimited data. That does not make one cheaper for every trip: compare the final number of days, usable high-speed data and hotspot allowance.
2. Unlimited service can still slow down
Saily's displayed Japan unlimited plan stated 5 GB per day without a speed limit, then continued data at up to 1 Mbps. Holafly describes its Japan plan as unlimited, while its terms allow network management under fair-use conditions. Holafly's destination page also warns that performance can be weaker or unstable outside stronger coverage areas.
A traveler uploading video or using cloud backup should not buy from the word “unlimited” alone. Look for the daily high-speed threshold, reduced speed, reset time and prohibited uses in the selected plan. Pause automatic photo backup and operating-system updates when predictable performance matters.
3. Hotspot rules can reverse the decision
Holafly's Japan page currently states that the destination plan can share 1 GB per day, with the total tied to plan length. Its separate Always On backup benefit cannot be shared by hotspot. Saily's hotspot treatment should be checked on the exact destination package; do not transfer a claim from one regional product to every plan.
4. Both can be installed before arrival
Saily says the Japan plan activates automatically on arrival when the Saily line and data roaming are enabled and it reaches a supported network. Holafly says the plan begins when you arrive and turn on the eSIM. Install with stable internet, but keep the travel line off until the provider's instructions say to enable it.
- Confirm the exact phone model is eSIM-compatible and unlocked.
- Save the installation instructions somewhere available offline.
- Set the travel line for mobile data and protect the home line from data roaming.
- Test with Wi-Fi off after arrival, without deleting the eSIM if it fails.
5. Holafly publishes a longer unused-plan window
Saily says a non-activated plan may be eligible for a full refund within 30 days. Activated plans are handled more narrowly and a full refund is not guaranteed.
Holafly publishes a six-month request window for an unactivated plan purchased directly from Holafly. Its device-incompatibility refund requires that the QR code has not been scanned and no data has been used, plus evidence of the incompatibility or lock. Connection-problem refunds can be partial or full, and Holafly asks users to contact support during the trip. The complete policies govern every request.
6. Choose by the trip's limiting factor
Shortlist Saily when you can estimate usage, a fixed package covers the route, and the final price beats paying for day-based unlimited service.
Shortlist Holafly when the exact-day unlimited product fits your phone use and its hotspot allowance is enough.
Keep comparing when you need a local phone number, unrestricted tethering, a named carrier or clearer rural coverage evidence.
Before checkout, capture the destination list, partner network, high-speed rule, hotspot allowance, activation deadline and refund terms. Those six facts are more useful than any provider-wide “best eSIM” claim.
