These are provider-level capabilities, not a promise that every country plan includes every feature. A Japan package and a global package from the same provider can have different networks, validity, calls, hotspot rules and activation triggers.
2. Compare the allowance you will actually buy
“From” prices are weak evidence. Use the same destination, dates and data assumption, then compare the checkout totals in one currency. On August 13, 2026, Saily's official Japan page displayed fixed plans from US$3.99 for 1 GB / 7 days through US$24.99 for 20 GB / 30 days, plus an unlimited option. Airalo's Japan page displayed both Standard and Unlimited filters; its visible unlimited packages ranged from three to 30 days.
3. “Unlimited” does not mean unlimited full speed
Saily's Japan page stated that its displayed unlimited plan included 5 GB per day without a speed limit, followed by unlimited data at up to 1 Mbps. Airalo's current unlimited-data explanation states 3 GB of high-speed data per 24-hour period, followed by 1 Mbps until the next reset. Airalo also warns that package details can differ.
For maps, messaging and light browsing, reduced speed may remain usable. For laptop work, large uploads, cloud backups or HD video, the daily high-speed allowance matters more than the word “unlimited.” Confirm hotspot permission and any tethering-specific cap on the selected package.
4. Install before travel, but read the activation trigger
Both providers recommend installing with dependable internet. Saily describes automatic plan activation after arrival when its eSIM and data roaming are enabled and a supported destination network is reached. Airalo says travelers can install in advance when outside the coverage area and connect after arrival, but package activation policies can vary.
- Confirm the phone is carrier-unlocked and the exact model supports eSIM.
- Record whether validity starts at installation, manual activation or first supported-network connection.
- Keep the home line from becoming the mobile-data fallback.
- Do not delete an installed profile while troubleshooting unless support instructs you to.
5. Refund rules are materially different
Saily's help center says a non-activated data plan may qualify for a full refund within 30 days of purchase. After installation and activation, a full refund is not guaranteed; quality-related cases may be considered under the policy.
Airalo's July 2026 terms describe a 14-day consumer withdrawal period that ends earlier if the eSIM activates. For an Airalo-caused service problem, the terms require a request within 30 days of the issue and an opportunity for support to restore service. The account may also show automated refund options for eligible orders. Read the actual policy before paying and contact support during the trip, not after it.
6. Which one should you choose?
Its exact fixed allowance fits your dates, the listed route is complete, and you value one reusable profile plus Saily's documented app features.
You want to compare several package structures in one marketplace, need its language/currency support, or its exact destination package has better terms.
You need a guaranteed local number, a named local carrier, unrestricted hotspot use or a refund condition neither selected package clearly provides.
The final decision should be package against package, not brand against brand. Take a screenshot of the network, allowance, validity, activation and refund details shown at checkout.
