The short answer
Many travel eSIM packages are data-only and do not provide a conventional number for carrier calls or SMS. Some packages include Data, Voice & Text, while some providers sell a separate phone-number add-on. A data-only plan can still power internet calling and messaging apps, and a Dual SIM phone can often keep your home number active while the travel eSIM supplies data.
1. eSIM is a format; voice and SMS are plan features
A physical SIM can carry a full phone plan or a data-only plan. An eSIM can do the same. The embedded chip does not decide whether you receive a number. The purchased service decides which networks, data allowance, minutes, messages and number—if any—you receive.

2. What works on a data-only travel eSIM?
Web browsing, maps, email and apps can use the mobile-data connection. Internet-based calling and messaging apps can also work once they are already set up, subject to the app's availability and network conditions. Ordinary carrier voice calls and SMS are not supplied by the data-only line.
Airalo's current help center distinguishes “Data Only” from “Data, Voice & Text” and tells buyers to check Plan Type before checkout. That distinction is useful across the category, but each provider uses its own labels and rules.
3. A plan with a number still needs careful reading
A displayed number does not guarantee every kind of call or message. The plan may limit calls to the covered country, exclude international dialing, omit MMS, block short codes or expire the number with the package. The number may also use a different country code from the destination.
Does the plan type say Data only or Data, Voice & Text?
If a number is included, which country code does it use?
Are calls local-only, international, incoming, outgoing or app-based?
How many minutes and SMS are included, and when do they expire?
What will the home carrier charge if its line remains active?
Read the package details immediately before purchase and save them. Phone-number products can change faster than general eSIM compatibility guidance.
4. Saily's data plan and phone-number add-on are separate concepts
Saily currently describes its core eSIM connectivity as data-only. Its help center also now documents an optional Saily phone-number service that sits alongside the data eSIM and supplies a US-based wireless number for supported voice calls and SMS.
The current Saily phone-number documentation says international calls are not supported, MMS and premium-rate short numbers are unsupported, and call forwarding is unavailable. It also warns that someone calling the US-based number may face international rates from their own carrier. Check current availability and the exact package terms in the Saily app before treating that add-on as part of a purchase.
5. You can often keep your home number on Dual SIM
On a compatible phone, leave Home available for its normal number and choose Travel as the mobile-data line. Apple and Google let users assign data separately from voice and messages on supported Dual SIM devices. Read our complete Dual SIM setup guide before changing the defaults.
This does not make the home line free abroad. Answering calls, making calls, sending messages, checking voicemail or allowing Home to use roaming data can trigger carrier charges. Ask the home carrier how incoming SMS, calls, voicemail and Wi-Fi Calling are billed in the destination.
- Travel eSIM: mobile data.
- Home SIM: normal number, only if you accept the carrier's roaming terms.
- Data switching: off to reduce accidental fallback.
6. Which plan type should you choose?

If you only need data, do not pay extra for a number you will not use. If voice or SMS is essential, do not infer it from the word eSIM—look for an explicit allowance in the exact offer.
7. Do not buy a travel number as an account-verification workaround
Banks, platforms and other services decide which numbers they accept. A plan can include SMS yet still be unsupported for a particular sender, short code or verification flow. Roam Field Guide does not recommend eSIMs for bypassing regional rules, account restrictions or identity checks.
For important accounts, configure an authenticator app, passkey, recovery codes or another officially supported recovery method before travel. Keep the home carrier's support details available if access to the original number is essential.
Common questions
Does installing a travel eSIM change my existing phone number?
No. It adds another cellular profile. Your existing number remains attached to its home plan unless that plan is transferred, removed or cancelled.
Can WhatsApp or another messaging app use a data-only eSIM?
Generally, an already configured internet-based app can use the data connection. Account setup, number changes and regional availability remain subject to that app's rules.
Can a data-only eSIM receive SMS?
Not through the data-only line itself. A separate active home line or a specific voice-and-text service may receive messages, subject to its terms and roaming charges.
